Beautiful Storm &
The Something Good
Two Poems by Joseph Roque
A Beautiful Storm
Every time Autumn
visits New England, I’m amazed
at how she odd-shapes multi-colored
blizzards of boisterous windblown leaves.
Don’t mind it at all;
reminds me of just how dependable;
how remarkable Nature is―
Always on time,
always creative and dazzling;
always bold and beautiful.
The Something Good
He has startled the comatose lethargy
of his sorry and uneventful life
with a thought that reminds him,
against all odds, that he was once
a part of something good.
A dim, slim sliver of memory
comes alive in his eyes―
There was love, and friends,
children and laughter;
the steadiness and wisdom
of the elders―
All of it perfect but always marching,
ever older, ever shrinking
and wrinkling capabilities.
But this one last time,
his mind will hold on tightly
to the something good, celebrate
a Thanksgiving revisited of precious
memories and images, and hold
in his hands every single smile.
