Don’t Forget to Wake

By Joseph Roque

Everyone needs dreams,
magical and instant escapes
to 3D fantasies; careful though,
dreams are bi-polar and unpredictable—

One night, happy fireside memories;
the next, hazy-moon Halloween howls
and bloody screams.

Taste the passion of a dream that
brings you love; the sweat and shake
of a lover’s fiery wake, or shudder
and stumble from a dark demon’s
beastly breath.

When the nightmares slowly unwind,
kneel and pray your mind resets
to a different place and time.

A love and hate affair with dreams
a small price to pay for the
sometimes-subtle fine line
between a smile and the scream.
