<\/strong>The Shell We Carry<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I run down to the cool waves <\/p>\n\n\n\n

that lap at my feet<\/p>\n\n\n\n

sink into the saturated<\/p>\n\n\n\n

granules of weathered rock and sharp seashells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, it feels as if I will fall<\/p>\n\n\n\n

right through to the center of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little claws gently grab at my toes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I dig until I find them<\/p>\n\n\n\n

little hermits in shell houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their tiny legs tickle in the palm of my hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wonder what we carry with us<\/p>\n\n\n\n

from place to place, looking for our bit of water<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a spot of darkness in which to bury ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crabs squirm under the sun\u2019s rays<\/p>\n\n\n\n

burrow into the small amount of sand <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cup in my hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the tips of their shells peeking out<\/p>\n\n\n\n

heads down, burrowing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

always digging deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Time Passes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The snow falls outside<\/p>\n\n\n\n

imperceptible as it has done <\/p>\n\n\n\n

for so many years<\/p>\n\n\n\n

before this house sat <\/p>\n\n\n\n

on this mountain<\/p>\n\n\n\n

before the ground was broken<\/p>\n\n\n\n

open to its natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today we sit <\/p>\n\n\n\n

still in this home<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with nowhere to go<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and nothing to do<\/p>\n\n\n\n

much like the tall fir tree<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that stands guard <\/p>\n\n\n\n

at the front of our land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will continue to grow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

its trunk getting wider and thicker<\/p>\n\n\n\n

it\u2019s apex taller and higher<\/p>\n\n\n\n

reaching upwards toward <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the blue grey sky<\/p>\n\n\n\n

because in it lies the <\/p>\n\n\n\n

nature of all things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her poetry is forthcoming in <\/em>Buddhist Poetry Review<\/em> and Amethyst Review<\/em> and has appeared in English Journal<\/em>, Poetry Quarterly<\/em>, and The Vignette Review<\/em>, the latter for which she was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. In 2014, she won the Moonbeam Children\u2019s Book Award for her debut novel Winter in the Soul<\/em>. She lives in northeast Pennsylvania with her family where she teaches English and creative writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
