Ordinary Time<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sunday morning brims with potential.  Free of obligation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

we congregate at the dining room table, more or less,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

around 8. Well after sunrise but before the suburban <\/p>\n\n\n\n

summer chores motorize the neighborhood into a factory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between adjusting our coffee\u2019s flavor by the teaspoon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and sharing articles from the Times, we confess<\/p>\n\n\n\n

our sins of omission, admit our failures of character,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and seek love despite our imperfections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A touch of the hand, a broken smile, a stray tear<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gently wiped from the cheek – we offer one another<\/p>\n\n\n\n

contemporaneous sermons, culled from our limited <\/p>\n\n\n\n

wisdom, with the surety of footnotes, will help <\/p>\n\n\n\n

walk us towards resurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In exchange for forgiveness, we make promises and offer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

declarations.  Before the day drifts to dusk we will<\/p>\n\n\n\n

have denied ourselves three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

            I.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the dark hours of morning<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Houselights, like stars illuminate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The constellation called neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dream clouds are severed by<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the serrated edge of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The uniformity covers night\u2019s nakedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            II. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day\u2019s orbit wakens the unseen hand<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of gravity as it pulls<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The body to life to ruin to dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            III.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In evening\u2019s quiet beneath the soft <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glow of candlelight a mother<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cradles her child, offers her breast and hums<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lullaby. Her voice rises towards<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mystery<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dream child dream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
