Two Poems

Early Morning in the Shrine Gardens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are secretly pleased, the bees,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at this summertime emptiness; <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the lavender expands her hands<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and bumbles kiss each finger\u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

a pollen communion. Mist enacts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a hazy censing, and the grass<\/p>\n\n\n\n

distils last night\u2019s orisons as<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a scattering of pearls. A starling\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

well-versed in her canticle: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

wood pigeons murmur responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rising sunlight gives the blessing \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

there is honey to be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norton\u2019s Caf\u00e9 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I came to rather love you \u2013 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

your quiet all-day litany of chatter,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

never offensive, nor overly formal,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

round tables easily shared, avoiding<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the rigid rows of canteen meals \u2013 no,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Norton\u2019s asks no questions, offers<\/p>\n\n\n\n

baked potatoes, sandwiches, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

indulgent cakes and strong black coffee,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and anyone can visit \u2013 oddly-dressed, transient, the day\u2019s handwritten specials,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

all blessed by Norfolk sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have spent summer evenings here,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with journal and a glass of wine,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

weary, sketching myself into some <\/p>\n\n\n\n

sort of comfort. Then there was that time<\/p>\n\n\n\n

when a woman dropped her cartons<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of farm-shop soup, and the waiting staff<\/p>\n\n\n\n

helped her so kindly, mopping <\/p>\n\n\n\n

the accident away \u2013 as though it were<\/p>\n\n\n\n

their pleasure to serve her, as though<\/p>\n\n\n\n

this was the reason they were there <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 this graceful call to prayer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
