\n

There are no children in the picture,
\njust my father proud in military khaki,
\nand my mother standing staunchly beside him,
\nher smile stifled half-way\u2026by concern I expect.<\/p>\n

But no children.
\nNo three daughters, spaced four years, then two years apart.
\nAnd certainly no son, no unexpected pregnancy,
\nsix years beyond the last.<\/p>\n

This is a photograph of newlyweds.
\nIt\u2019s not a snapshot of everything going forward.
\nAs much as I study the faces, the way they carry themselves,
\nI see no births, no growing family.<\/p>\n

There are no children in the picture
\nbut no deaths either.
\nNot of the two in bright color.
\nNot of those three daughters.
\nThere\u2019s no indication that I am all that is left
\nof the family I was born into.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re just a couple starting out,
\none about to risk his life in overseas combat,
\nthe other consigned to an anxious waiting game at home.<\/p>\n

But they survived.
\nThey struggled but made do.
\nThey housed, fed, nurtured, all four of us.
\nGone now yes, like my three sisters.<\/p>\n

But they\u2019re still here, in the old photo album,
\nready to resume that pose whenever I open it up
\nto the page captioned, \u201cMom and Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are no children in the picture.
\nAnd I am that child.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
