I walked in night\u2019s syrup down a Hermit Island road, caught between snoring and 3 A.M. loving,<\/p>\n

waiting for the fish to wake. I felt the heat<\/p>\n

of stars and sand\u2019s abrasives, the mad interplay<\/p>\n

of elements thrusting at moccasins and eyes.<\/p>\n

Ahead, the moon pushed light\u2019s broad blade<\/p>\n

down through the perfection of trees, a leaf<\/p>\n

scattered delight, a late moth struggled toward<\/p>\n

the infinities. I drank my beer, remembering<\/p>\n

a starfish caught hours before on a burst of rocks,<\/p>\n

its five fingers searching, as my senses did,<\/p>\n

for momentary salvation. I realized I had no<\/p>\n

enemies, I had no hate. I moved out, into, and was<\/p>\n

alone, with the grace of stars and the abrasives of sand.<\/p>\n
