\nLamentations<\/em><\/p>\n

Mary loved paintings of Saints.
\nDutiful, with a brandy flask in tow,
\nBringing aid and comfort to strangers,
\nLost and frozen in the alpine snow.<\/p>\n

I fell to my knees when I saw you,
\nDrawn by the soul in your eyes.
\nThe full measure of sorrow struck me.
\nHugging you tight dear Tessie–I cried.<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s gone, Mom\u2019s gone,
\nThe center of our lives has passed.
\nShe\u2019ll live in our hearts forever, sweet girl.
\nNothing else in this world will last.<\/p>\n

The Last Tail Wag<\/em><\/p>\n

We let Dolly off her leash that morning,
\nNo one seemed to mind.
\nShe frolicked through the fresh snow,
\nGreeting everyone she could find.<\/p>\n

Twice abandoned and craving love;
\nShe came to us that spring.
\nNow, we basked in the special joy,
\nA Saint Bernard can bring<\/p>\n

Bounding down snowy sidewalks,
\nLeaping through front yards.
\nShe had us all smiling and laughing,
\nLike figures on a greeting card.<\/p>\n

We lifted her into the car this morning
\nHer legs so swollen she could barely stand.
\nWe never heard a sound of pain.
\nWe drove in silence; Mary holding my hand.<\/p>\n

Lying on the floor, a tube in her vein,
\nShe had little time left to live.
\nWhen I walked through the door, she wagged her tail.
\nTill the very end, she had love to give.<\/p>\n

Stroking her gently, I recalled that Sunday:
\nDolly running freely through the snow.
\nYou\u2019ll never wear your leash again, sweet girl.
\nOff to heaven you go.<\/p>\n

The Nose Kiss<\/em><\/p>\n

Quiet as fog he stands by the bed,
\nStudying my face as I doze.
\nNo whining or clomping this morning,
\nJust a gentle touch upon my nose.<\/p>\n

Wake up and let me out Dad.
\nI promise to be good.
\nI want to run with the sunrise,
\nAnd taste the morning in the woods<\/p>\n
