Middlebury October<\/h4>\n

Trip from One Home to the Other<\/h4>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

Dying, with sky already at the wake,
\na million leaves on racks of branches,
\nthrashed this way, that way,
\nby the brassy wind, out to finish
\nthe job the season started.<\/p>\n

The bloodless, so blood red,
\nveins drained of future
\ntrumpet lush October scars,
\nas frost waits in thought,
\nand pastels flaunt in ruddy deed.<\/p>\n

Despite the withered petioles,
\nthe canopy strains
\nto live each moment longer.<\/p>\n

No promise in this loveliness,
\nno Lazarus guarantee from
\nbroad late-afternoon:
\nold dreams curl at the edges,
\nwrinkle, decay to never waking.
\nAs with all beauty,
\nsurvival would defeat the purpose.<\/p>\n

For ten thousand miles,
\nI thought of Brisbane,
\nlanded at Eagle Farm Airport,
\nanxious to verify
\nall that accumulated truth.<\/p>\n

Would I be stranger to its streets?
\nWould this man without a country
\nfeel more absolute than ever?
\nWould my mother’s old salt tears
\ngrant me welcome return?<\/p>\n

First night, jet-lagged,
\nI followed the moon till dawn,
\nmore fear than faith,
\nas I looked out on
\nthis dimmest of frontiers
\nuntil the sun woke up
\nand burned clear its favorite continent.<\/p>\n

I heard the surf near,
\nrowdy, boisterous,
\nno longer that New England
\ntepid crawl over rock scrawl –
\nfrom the palm trees
\non the first lighted hill,
\nsulfur-crested cockatoos
\ncame out at me shrieking.<\/p>\n

This is the house I was born and raised in.
\nOnly storms can claim more thunder.
\nHalf New Englander, half Australian,
\nbetween two worlds, no hesitation.<\/p>\n
