\n <\/p>\n
Summer dawn breaks to conquer
\ninsistent, relentless\u2014cheered on
\nby crescendo of cicada choruses.
\nIn overgrown fields, petals push
\nbright colors above the dominant green
\nfighting its own battle
\nagainst brown burnout.
\nNods on stems, hardy and overgrown
\nsalute the sustaining blaze,
\nall the while stealing
\ntheir oranges, yellows and reds from it.
\nAugust pumps the bellows
\nhotter and hotter, urgent blasts
\nstrengthen the hardy, wilt the weak.
\nTaproots pushed down deep in spring
\npay off now with underground sips
\nfrom field canteens. Trees give up
\nexcess leaves, felled prematurely.
\nSummer\u2019s tight grip slowly slips
\nfrom Solstice to Equinox.
\nThe proud warrior soon
\nmust retreat. But not yet.
\nAutumn\u2019s legions of frost and turning
\nblood-red leaves still gather in the distance,
\ntheir breath only a slight chill
\nafter moonrise on September evenings.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
