Artist Statement – Fabrice Poussin

Seizing the moment is key. It must be quick, it must be accurate, and it must carry a message through form, color, and shades. Though two-dimensional, a photograph should activate all the senses and trigger memories…or even create a new image for the viewer. Whether I walk the streets of a city or a small town; whether I explore highland plateaus or the desert lands of the American West, I seek to create such experiences. In this link between the spectator and the scene, I am inspired by the French literary critic Roland Barthes and what he called the “punctum,” that special element that brings the two together through something like an umbilical cord. There is no better feeling for me than knowing the viewer can be pulled into a photograph through its composition.
